Your Lactation Medicine Visit: Care for You and Your Baby
One appointment. Two patients. Individualized medical care for both.
An initial mother-baby appointment typically lasts 75–90 minutes. During that time, both the breastfeeding parent and baby may receive an individual medical evaluation and care based on their needs.
Why are both mother and baby billed?
A lactation medicine visit may include individual medical evaluation and care for two patients. When both you and your baby are treated, separate claims may be submitted for each patient.
What costs may apply?
Copays, deductibles, or coinsurance may apply to you, your baby, or both. Your insurer determines how each claim is processed under each patient's benefits.
Isn't breastfeeding care covered at 100%?
Some preventive breastfeeding services may be covered in full, but lactation medicine visits can include evaluation and treatment that are subject to your plan's medical benefits. Coverage at 100% is not guaranteed.
Why will I receive two insurance explanations?
When two claims are submitted, you may receive a separate Explanation of Benefits for each patient. An EOB shows how a claim was processed; it is not a bill.

What determines my cost?
Your plan, network status, deductible, copay, coinsurance, and the care each patient receives all affect your responsibility.
Should I provide my baby's insurance information?
Yes. Please provide current insurance information for both you and your baby before the appointment.
Is an EOB a bill?
No. An Explanation of Benefits is an insurer's summary of how a claim was processed. Any amount due is communicated separately.

When both receive medical evaluation and treatment, we submit separate insurance claims for each patient. You should expect separate claim information, commonly two Explanations of Benefits (EOBs).
